Alice Springs Hospital is under siege from an angry mob of up to three hundred people baying for blood after alleged child killer, Jefferson Lewis was arrested around 10pm on Thursday night, April 30.
The chaotic scenes erupted when Lewis was brought to the hospital after he was beaten soon after being discovered earlier in the night.
Reports are that Lewis was found in a town camp, thought to be Charles Creek Camp on the northern side of Alice Springs.
Once he was found, a vigilante mob is alleged to have meted out some of it’s own rough justice, leaving Lewis severely injured.
Police were eventually called and he was transported to Alice Springs Hospital under police guard, suffering severe injuries.
A video taken at scene in the town camp and widely circulated on social media shows the the crowd calling for the road to be blocked to prevent the ambulance from leaving the area and for it to be smashed so the crowd can continue its own form of vigilante justice.
After Lewis arrived at the hospital, the angry crowd grew before attempting to storm the front of the building and smashing some of its windows by throwing large rocks.
They then began pelting police with rocks and other projectiles before setting at least one police cage car on fire.
Firefighters were called to put out out the torched car, but not befor it was totally destroyed.
Police wearing riot gear and using shields to protect themselves fired tear gas, and reportedly rubber bullets, to disperse the crowd, with the mob eventually forced back from the hospital car park along Gap Road, while some of the group gathered on the forecourt of the service staion opposite..
Many of the police who were holed up in the ambulance bay of the hospital were pelted with rocks.
Police taking cover behind a wall and several police cars and ambulances could be seen holding firearms at the ready, while others could be seen suffering the effects of the tear gas that had been used on the crowd.
